Natural Hair Care that Won’t Pollute Land and Water

When you live off-grid you need to be extra careful not to pollute your land and water. Even organic and “biodegradable” products can have ingredients that are harmful if consumed by livestock or taken up by plants. It’s important to embrace a natural hair care system that works for you. Here are the basics:

Natural Hair Care Step 1: Moisturize

Start your natural hair care routine with 1/4 cup warm organic coconut or olive oil as your base. Then Massage into your hair at the roots. Leave it in your hair for an hour or so. Try adding argan or castor oil for deeper conditioning. We recommend only doing this once every couple weeks. In our experience it can sometimes take a couple washes before the oil is completely rinsed out. So, we prefer not to use it every time! we do feel it’s absolutely worth it when our hair is silky smooth and healthy!

Step 2: Wash

Next wash your oily scalp and hair with a shampoo bar. The shampoo bar you choose should be made with the simplest ingredients so the don’t pollute – even temporarily. You might want to try Tierra Soul’s Lazy-Lady Lard soap for oilier hair or our milk & honey soap if your hair is on the drier side.

Step 3: Rinse

Start before you get into the shower or bath by pre-mixing 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar in a pint of water. Rinse your hair with 1/2 pint of the mixture. Rinsing with apple cider vinegar will remove any build-up of soap residue, balance pH of your scalp and help your hair dry silky and smooth.

Step 4: Style

Smooth and weight down any fly aways with a simple salve or light lotion. You might try the Lazy-Lady Lard Salve and Lotion available in the Tierra Soul Farm-Stand!
