I first read this little mantra when I was 27 and learning about astrology. I have spent the last 15+ years living in to and up to its simple yet profound wisdom. Rather than consider what is right, or best or most perfect I have made it a life rule to prefer the beautiful over everything. The poetic over the plain, the sacred over the mundane. It didn’t take long for the deeper truth to settle in though….
It provides us with everything we need. Sometimes the mundane is the perfect place for seeing beauty and one simple adjustment can make all the difference.
There is a permaculture principle that says: Make the smallest change possible for the greatest possible effect.
To me, this is the essence of the We have no art…. mantra.
Life doesn’t need to be about creating masterpieces. It is about simplicity, adding or adjusting the one small thing that makes all the difference. This is the difference between the sacred and the mundane, the difference between busy-ness and the good life. It is the efficiency of working with nature, even with our problems…
